ISLAMABAD - World Health Organization imposed travel restrictions imposed on Pakistan that will come into effect from June 1, 2014, all international travelers from Pakistan will have to produce a valid Polio vaccination certificate.
A joint statement by the National Ministry of health and the World Health Organization about the IHR (International health Regulations) stated that some temporary restrictions relating to international travel to and from Pakistan are imposed for the required vaccination certificate prepared in compliance with the IHR Annex VII formulated template. But till the completion of printing process of templates, a certificate can be issued on plain paper as well with the required stamps from concerned health officials across the country.
The Ministry of National Health Services is striving hard to implement the IHR temporary recommendations made by the WHO because of international concern shown due to the spread of polio virus from Pakistan to the rest of the world.
According to the WHO, Pakistan should officially declare the interruption of polio virus transmission a national public health emergency if they have not already done so.
Pakistan have also to ensure that all residents and long-term visitors (anyone staying in the country for more than 4 weeks) receive a dose of polio virus vaccine between 4 weeks and 12 months before traveling to any other country.
As per WHO recommendations Pakistan should ensure that individuals undertaking urgent travel (i.e. within 4 weeks), who have not received a dose vaccine in the duration of last 4 weeks to 12 months, take a dose of polio vaccine at least by the time of departure and for this service vaccine can also be provided at air ports as well.
Pakistan is taking all these recommendations seriously and all the relevant institutions are taking radical steps in this regard. To get these restrictions removed that are causing difficulties for Pakistani travelers, both federal and provincial governments in Pakistan are coordinating with WHO, UNICEF and the other health development partners as well to make full use of all available resources and ensure availability of vaccine, vaccination certificates and human resources in order to fulfill WHO recommendations.
